SASA Dinner 2018

By Lynette Santhakumar ’19, Bucknell’s South Asian Student Association (SASA) proudly presented the 47th annual SASA Dinner to the campus and Lewisburg community on November 3rd in Larison Dining Hall. As the oldest student-run event on campus, the dinner strives to share various aspects of different cultures through experience. Members are also especially given the opportunity to take pride in South Asian culture on this night as they educate others. The first major component of planning the dinner included choosing the theme. Our theme this year was special in that it was inspired by the movie, Crazy Rich Asians. With this […]

Get $10,000 for your summer project!

In April 2015, Nepal was hit by a powerful earthquake leading to more than 9,000 deaths and billions of dollars in damage in infrastructure. Several micro-hydropower plants, that provide power to the rural areas of Nepal that cannot be connected to the national electric grid due to extreme terrain, were destroyed too. To help with the rehabilitation in Nepal, the Nepalese students at Bucknell applied for the Projects for Peace grant to help restore one such power plant in Gorkha, Nepal, and successfully implemented the project in 2017. This past summer, Ikmal Azman ’19 used his collaborative initiative, “Architects of […]

My Common Ground Experience 2018

By Sinet Kroch ’22, Common Ground Participant ’18, Hi, I am Sinet, the only first year student from Cambodia. “Oh, Common Ground? It’s intensive!” “It’s for “you”!” These were some of the responses I heard while inquiring about Common Ground. These responses freaked me out a bit as I was looking for a somewhat relaxing time for my first break at Bucknell. I still chose to apply to Common Ground because of the name itself, COMMON Ground! My first thought was it is a place for everyone, who have something in COMMON; it doesn’t matter what that something is. Common […]

RAMP UP Leadership Experience

By Eileen Tan ’19 After leading RAMP Up! during my sophomore year, I knew I wanted to do it one more time. Coming back early to campus made my transition from studying abroad back to campus much easier and I was excited to meet the first-years coming into the program. Unlike the previous time I led RAMP Up! we were expecting more inclement weather which meant we needed to create back-up plans for all the outdoor activities that were originally planned. With four other pre-orientation leaders, we brainstormed indoor activities that could still engage the first-years will bringing the group […]

International Orientation 2018; Leader Experience

By Trang Nguyen ‘21, International Orientation Assistant Being inspired from my International Orientation Assistants (IOAs) in International Orientation (IO)’17, I applied to be an IOA for the program this year. After going through the process, I can say that being an IOA was undoubtedly one of the most amazing experiences I have had at Bucknell. Becoming an IOA for the first time, I was both excited and anxious, as I was not sure if I would be able to do my job well. Therefore, I decided to set a goal for myself for the orientation; to help the first-year international […]

International Orientation 2018; Student Experience

By Sherab Dorji ‘22, International Orientation Student Participant If I could summarize the night of August 8th in one word, it would be unforgettable. I arrived at the bus stop with my parents, tired and very irritated. To make things worse, there were no cabs available, and I was very close to bursting into tears. Luckily, I was able to contact an International Orientation Leader (IOL) from Myanmar, Win, who generously dropped me off at the ELC to officially check in. I was extremely nervous to meet the International Orientation Assistants (IOAs); they were the people that could potentially make […]
