Send Silence Packing: Inspiring Action for Suicide Prevention Through Education and Advocacy

Bucknell’s “Active Minds” organization introduced a new suicide prevention program called “Behind the Backpacks“. On Monday, November 1st, the organization set up an exhibition featuring personal stories of people who have been lost to suicide and survivors of suicide. The aim of the exhibit was to educate visitors about the impact of suicide and inspire action to prevent suicide through storytelling.

It is our responsibility as members of the Bucknell community to change the culture around mental health and help prevent suicide on campus. Seeking help takes a lot of strength and courage, but it is one of the things you can do today to prevent suicide. To learn more about this program, please visit: activeminds.org/sendsilencepacking or visit: activeminds.org/backpacks for the virtual exhibit experience.

Being aware of the signs that you or your peers are not okay is important. For example, is there a fellow classmate that you’ve noticed is always eating alone? Maybe this person is simply shy or a loner. But a little kindness makes all the difference in someone’s life. Go introduce yourself with a smile. Invite them to eat with you. Ask them about themselves.

Some of the things they may be feeling are:

  • Intense loneliness (even if they have a great support system)
  • The feeling that their life is insignificant and no one would notice or care if they were gone
  • The desire not necessarily to die, but to cease living in order to stop mental, emotional, and/or physical pain
  • A very deep sense of hopelessness
  • And more

If one of your friends or peers doesn’t seem quite themselves, talk to them. Recognize the signs. Some helpful information on what to look for can be found HERE. Mental health is not a joke or something to be ashamed of needing help with. You are not “crazy” for needing help with your mental health. You are not alone.
